While there will never be the same number of books for the 924/944/968 cars as compared to the 911 series, there are some good books out there.

Here's a list with my short reviews (if I've read them):

Peter Morgan

Brian Long

Karl Ludvigsen

Michael Cotton

Brooklands Books

Haynes Manuals

Porsche Publications

Peter Morgan

To date, I've found Peter Morgan to be my favorite (book) author on the 924/944/968 series. So far, I've read the following:

Original Porsche 924/944/968 by Peter Morgan – 128 pages

This book provides a good overview of the 924, 944 and 968 cars. The color photos were (almost) all taken especially for this book rather than using original press photos from the factory. There is VIN decoding information (p31-32 & p99) and Option-Code information (p73-74) included as well.

I recommend this book for all 924/944/968 owners.

The Porsche 924/944 Book by Peter Morgan – 174 pages

This book is a more technical than the one above. Peter Morgan provides a technical overview on Buying, Bodywork, Engines, Fuel Systems, Ignition System, Clutch, Transmission, Suspension and Competition. This book is not a manual for doing service or repair work but it does provide interesting background reading material.

I recommend this book for 924 and 944 owners. 968 owners may also find it interesting as some of the systems are shared with the older cars.

Brian Long

Brian has written an number of Porsche books including volumes on the 924 and 944 as follows:

Porsche 924 by Brian Long – 192 pages

I haven't read this book but I've included it for reference.

Porsche 944 by Brian Long – 192 pages

A fine book documenting the history of the 944. If you were to compare this book to Peter Morgan's “Original Porsche 924/944/968”, Brian Long provides more 944 specific history while Peter Morgan provides more specification, VIN and option-code information. Also, Brian Long uses far more original factory press release photos compared to Peter Morgan.

I recommend this book for all 944 owners.

Karl Ludvigsen

Porsche: Excellence Was Expected by Karl Ludvigsen – 1,574 pages and 1,629 photos & illustrations

Published in 3 volumes by Bentley Publishers, it's considered to be one of the definitive references for all Porsche cars. This 2nd edition covers all Porsche models through 2003, with 102 pages devoted to the 924/944/968 models.

If you're just looking for facts and figures about the 924/944/968, then Peter Morgan or Brian Long can provide sufficient information (at significantly less cost). But if you're looking for one book on all things Porsche (especially racecar history), then this is the one. Where Karl Ludvigsen really shines is bringing additional historical information into the public domain. For example, in this book you learn:

  • After finishing 6th overall at the 1980 Le Mans, the 924 Carrera GTP motor was dyno tested after the race and was found to have gained a few HP depite having run a 24-hour race.

  • In the late eighties, three different 6-cylinder motors were evaluated for the 944:
    1988 – 3.0-liter 24v V-6 from Volvo
    1989 – 2.7-liter version of the 3.6-liter V-8 that was developed for the aborted four-door Porsche 989
    1989 – 2.5-liter I-6 M50 motor from BMW

  • To get the 968 into production Ulrich Bez (Porsche technical-director) had to create his own engineering team to get the job done because Rudi Noppen (Porsche production-chief) had battled him all the way.

I recommend this book for all Porsche owners.

Michael Cotton

Porsche 924, 944 & 968 by Michael Cotton – 144 pages

A history of the 924, 944 and 968. While I'm a fan of Michael Cotton and look forward to reading his regular contributions in Panorama and 911 & Porsche World, I have to say that his book is not as good as Peter Morgan's “Original Porsche 924/944/968”. However, one nice thing Michael Cotton does have is a summary of some road-test results in the back of his book. Then again, you can get a more complete list of road-tests with the Brooklands Books.

Brooklands Books

Brooklands Books is a UK publisher which produces compilations of road-test articles by various magazines. They have produced volumes on the 924, 944 and 968. I find it very interesting to read contemporary articles on the 924/944/968 when they were being produced and I heartily recommend these compilations.

Porsche 924 Gold Portfolio 1975-1988 compiled by R.M. Clarke – 180 pages and 450 photos & illustrations

53 articles on the Porsche 924 from 1975 to 1988.

I recommend this book for all 924 owners.

Porsche 944 Ultimate Portfolio compiled by R.M. Clarke – 208 pages and 550 photos & illustrations

56 articles on the Porsche 944 from 1981 to 1991.

I recommend this book for all 944 owners.

Porsche 968 Limited Edition Extra compiled by R.M. Clarke – 136 pages and 350 photos & illustrations

36 articles on the Porsche 968 from 1991 to 2000. Articles from 1996 to 2000 were used car guides.

I recommend this book for all 968 owners.

Haynes Manuals

Known the world over by shady-tree mechanics, the Haynes Manuals aim to provide straight forward procedures for the do-it-yourself mechanic. They have produced volumes for the 924 and 944 as follows:

Porsche 924 and Turbo 1976 thru 1982 Automotive Repair Manual by J.H. Haynes & Charles Lipton

I haven't read this book but I've included it for reference.

As an alternative (though not necessarily better), see my list of 924/944/968 Technical Sites.

Porsche 944 1983 thru 1989 Automotive Repair Manual by Larry Warren – 219 pages

Aimed at the normally aspirated 8-valve cars and so it does not cover the specific issues associated with the 944S, 944S2 and 944 Turbo. I've head many mixed reviews of this book. Some people think it's great while others have complained that there are mistakes in the book. I suggest exercising caution if using it.

As an alternative (though not necessarily better), see my list of 924/944/968 Technical Sites.
